What Are Lab Grown Diamonds?
Lab grown diamonds are real diamonds, created in controlled laboratory environments using advanced technological processes that replicate the natural conditions under which diamonds form in the Earth's mantle.
These diamonds possess the same chemical composition, crystal structure, and physical properties as natural diamonds. They are not diamond simulants like cubic zirconia or moissanite they are genuine diamonds in every sense.
The only difference is their origin. While natural diamonds form over billions of years deep within the Earth, lab grown diamonds are created in a matter of weeks using cutting-edge technology.
The Science Behind Lab Grown Diamonds
Chemical Vapor Deposition
CVD Method
In this process, a diamond seed is placed in a sealed chamber filled with carbon-rich gas. The chamber is heated to around 800°C, causing the gases to break apart and pure carbon atoms to attach to the seed, building the diamond layer by layer. This method allows for greater control over the diamond's characteristics.
Lab Grown Vs Natural Diamonds
| Characteristic | Lab-Grown Diamonds | Natural Diamonds |
|---|---|---|
| Composition | Pure carbon (C) | Pure carbon (C) |
| Hardness | 10 on Mohs scale | 10 on Mohs scale |
| Formation Time | Weeks to months | 1–3 billion years |
| Origin | Created in lab | Mined from Earth |
| Environmental Impact | Lower impact | Higher impact |
| Price | 30–40% more affordable | Higher cost |
The 4Cs Apply Equally
- Cut
Graded on proportions, symmetry, and polish—identical standards for both types - Color
Graded from D (colorless) to Z (light yellow)—same scale for all diamonds - Clarity
Graded from D (colorless) to Z (light yellow)—same scale for all diamonds - Carat
Weight measured identically—one carat equals 0.2 grams for all diamonds
